LayerZero

Layer 0

The leading cross-chain messaging protocol, now launching its own chain, with a token still waiting for revenue.

Catalyst-driven rebound v1.1 · as of 2026-10-21 · framework v1.13 Coinsight · all analyses
Bottom line

LayerZero carries most identifiable cross-chain stablecoin volume, including Tether's USDT0, and has Citadel, ARK and Tether behind its new Zero chain, which is set to launch on 30 Nov 2026. The token has almost tripled from its $0.72 August low to $2.04, but it is still −73% below its December 2024 ATH. Paid value flowing to ZRO is small: the fee switch has failed four votes and buybacks are a fraction of the ~23–26M ZRO unlocked every month. Zero mainnet also ends the lock on ~183M re-locked tokens, so the next two months decide whether demand can absorb new supply.

How a token moves across chains with LayerZero

User
Sends USDT0 from Ethereum

Calls the OFT contract to send 1,000 USDT0 to Arbitrum.

Source chain
Burns or locks tokens

OFT debits the sender; the LayerZero endpoint emits a message. Fees paid in ETH.

DVNs
Verify the message

The verifier networks the app chose independently confirm the packet.

Executor
Delivers on Arbitrum

Pays destination gas and calls the destination endpoint.

Destination chain
Mints to receiver

OFT credits 1,000 USDT0; supply stays one token across chains.

Where ZRO comes in: nowhere in this flow today. Fees go to DVNs and executors in native gas tokens. ZRO only gains if the fee switch adds a protocol fee that is burned as ZRO, through Stargate and future ATLAS buybacks, and as the coordination token of Zero.

Unlock: ~23–26M ZRO a month (Tokenomist, Crypto Ticker) at today's $2.04. Buybacks: one Oct 2026 count finds ~2.54M ZRO bought for ~$3.68M over 13 months (≈ $0.28M a month); other reports count up to $112.7M including the one-off 50M repurchase from investors. Stargate revenue ~$2M a month and the $100M a year target are company statements from a podcast. Even at the target, buybacks would cover about a sixth of unlock value.

    Protocol revenue
    ~$0.45M / quarter

DefiLlama, Q2 2026 gross. No messaging fee is charged; the fee switch failed in Dec 2024, Jun 2025, Dec 2025 and Jun 2026.

  • medium signal
    Stargate revenue
    ~$2M / month

Company figure; all of it is meant to buy ZRO. The only live paid-usage link to the token.

  • strong signal
    Cross-chain volume

LayerZero Scan figure cited by the CEO, excl. CCTP; claimed ~80% share of identifiable cross-chain dollar volume.

  • weak signal
    Messages

Cumulative to Feb 2026 across ~168 chains; one message = one cross-chain instruction, many automated.

LayerZero is heavily used: it is the default rail for omnichain stablecoins. Very little of that use reaches ZRO today. The adoption scoreboard for the token is buybacks plus any fee burn versus the monthly unlock, and Zero's ATLAS fees from December are the first real test.

Project

What it is
A Layer 0 messaging protocol (since 2022) that lets smart contracts on ~165 chains send messages and tokens to each other. Issuers use its OFT standard to move a single token across chains, for example Tether's USDT0, Ethena's USDe and ~730 other OFTs.
Team
LayerZero Labs, led by co-founder and CEO Bryan Pellegrino. The LayerZero Foundation runs governance and the token; it bought Stargate in 2025 and folded STG into ZRO.
Technology
Apps choose their own security: independent verifier networks (DVNs) check each message and executors deliver it. Zero, a separate high-throughput L1 with EVM, private payments and trading zones (lzATLAS), launches 30 Nov 2026.
Traction
159M+ messages and $225B+ moved across ~168 chains by Feb 2026; ~80% of identifiable cross-chain dollar volume (company claim). USDT0 alone has moved ~$70B. Citadel Securities, ARK and Tether invested; DTCC, ICE and Google Cloud are named Zero partners.
Competitors
Wormhole, Chainlink CCIP, Axelar, Circle CCTP for USDC, Hyperlane, and intent-based bridges such as Across.
Key risks
Protocol charges no fee, so ZRO has no direct revenue; heavy unlocks into 2027; Zero's 2M TPS claims are unverified; a bridge exploit on a large OFT would hurt the whole brand.
Roadmap
Zero mainnet and lzATLAS exchange engine on 30 Nov 2026, with 75% of ATLAS fees (after rebates) planned for ZRO buyback and burn. Next fee switch referendum due around Dec 2026 (six-month cadence).

ZRO beat BTC and ETH over 12 months, but only because of the September to October rally; at the 3 Aug low it was −57% below its Oct 2025 starting price. No 3-year figure exists: ZRO started trading on 20 Jun 2024, and it is now −73% below its $7.47 ATH (6 Dec 2024). Over 3 years the benchmarks are BTC ~+179% and ETH ~+53% (manual figures; the free CoinGecko API covers 365 days).

Tokenomics

Supply
1B ZRO fixed, no inflation. ~400M circulating (40%); FDV $2.04B is 2.5× market cap.
Emissions
None from the protocol. All new float comes from vesting of insider allocations.
Unlocks/vesting
Strategic partners (32.2%) and core contributors (25.5%) vest monthly on the 20th after a one-year cliff, ~23–26M ZRO a month until about mid-2027. ~183M ZRO, including 50M bought back from investors in Sep 2025, are re-locked until Zero mainnet.
Utility
Governance votes (fee switch), and the planned coordination and fee-burn token of the Zero chain. Messages are paid in gas tokens of the source chain, not in ZRO.
Concentration
Insiders (partners plus contributors) hold ~58% of supply; the community share is mostly in Foundation hands. Alameda's estate moved 7.9M ZRO to Wintermute in April 2026.
Sinks
Stargate sends 100% of its revenue to ZRO buybacks (since spring 2026). Fee switch burn and ATLAS buyback-and-burn are proposals, not live.

Bull case

Zero and lzATLAS go live on 30 Nov with real trading volume, ATLAS fee burns start, and the Dec referendum finally turns on the fee switch. ZRO holds the $1.86 to $1.89 October closes and breaks the $2.30 March high toward $3.

Bear case

The 183M re-locked tokens and ~25M monthly unlocks hit the market after mainnet while Zero volume is thin and the fee switch fails a fifth time. ZRO gives back the autumn rally and falls toward $1.00, the September base.

Watch before the next re-run

  • Zero mainnet on 30 Nov: launch on time, ATLAS volume and first fees burned
  • Release schedule of the ~183M re-locked ZRO after mainnet
  • Dec 2026 fee switch referendum result and turnout
  • Monthly buybacks vs ~23–26M ZRO unlock; $1.86 support and $2.30 March high
