Bottom line

ZEC is up +369% in a year and back in the top 10, driven by demand for private money, a Grayscale spot ETF (25 Aug 2026) and record shielded use: ~29% of supply sat in shielded pools in September. The path was violent: −72% from Nov 2025 to the Mar 2026 low, a soundness bug in the Orchard pool in June, and a split between ECC's team and its board. Paid usage is still tiny: fees are a fraction of a percent of new issuance, so the token's value rests on store-of-value demand for private ZEC, not on fee revenue. NU7 (25-second blocks, 60% of fees removed from circulation) is the next test, with mainnet targeted for 5 Nov.

How a private ZEC payment flows through Zcash

Sender
Gets ZEC in a wallet

Buys ZEC or swaps BTC or USDC into it, e.g. via NEAR Intents in Zodl.

Wallet
Builds a shielded transaction

Creates a zero-knowledge proof; sender, receiver and amount stay encrypted.

Nodes
Verify the proof

Zebra and zcashd nodes check validity and no double spend without seeing details.

Miners
Mine it into a block

Equihash proof of work every 75 s (25 s after NU7); miner earns 1.25 ZEC plus fees.

Dev fund
20% of the subsidy split off

8% to Zcash Community Grants, 12% to the coinholder-voted lockbox.

Receiver
Wallet decrypts the note

Sees the payment with its keys; a viewing key can be shared with an auditor.

ZEC is both the money being sent and the fee. Each block mints new ZEC for miners and the dev fund; fees are small (from 0.0001 ZEC, ~$0.13, for a simple transaction). After NU7, 60% of each fee leaves circulation into a reserve that is reissued later, so ZEC is not burned for good.

Issuance: 1.5625 ZEC per 75-second block, 1,152 blocks a day, ≈ 1,800 ZEC (≈ $2.3M at $1,260). Fees: a rough estimate from ZIP 317 minimum fees (0.0001 ZEC for a simple transaction, more for shielded ones with many actions) and ~63k shielded transactions a week plus transparent traffic; no live fee dashboard could be checked, so treat it as an order of magnitude. Either way fees cover well under 1% of new supply.

    ETF assets
    > $500M

Grayscale ZCSH, 8 Sep 2026, incl. ~$100M from DCG. Outflows in mid-October; a Winklevoss ETF is filed.

  • medium signal
    Shielded transactions

    > $600M

ZEC swaps through the Zodl wallet since Oct 2025, a company figure.

Zcash does not earn meaningful fees, so the adoption scoreboard is how much ZEC people choose to hold privately: shielded supply share, shielded transaction counts and ETF holdings. All three hit multi-year highs in Sep 2026.

Project

What it is
Zcash (live since Oct 2016): a Bitcoin-style proof-of-work coin with a 21M cap whose shielded transactions hide sender, receiver and amount using zero-knowledge proofs.
Team
Founded by Zooko Wilcox. Core work is spread over ZODL (ex-ECC staff, $25M seed from Paradigm and a16z, makes the Zodl wallet, formerly Zashi), the Zcash Foundation (Zebra node), Shielded Labs (Crosslink) and grant-funded teams.
Technology
Shielded pools with viewing keys for selective disclosure. Ironwood (28 Jul 2026) replaced the Orchard pool after a soundness bug, with a turnstile that makes total supply verifiable.
Traction
~63k shielded transactions a week in Sep 2026, the busiest since 2022; Grayscale's ZCSH ETF passed $500M AUM on 8 Sep; NEAR Intents swaps through Zodl; Winklevoss filed for a second ETF on 6 Oct.
Competitors
Monero (XMR) for private payments, privacy layers on Ethereum, stablecoins with optional privacy, and proposed shielded Bitcoin designs.
Key risks
Price swings of 50–70%; delisting and regulatory pressure on privacy coins; a hidden-supply bug in Jun 2026 shook trust; open fights over the dev fund and who controls it; fees too small to pay for security.
Roadmap
NU7 mainnet (target 5 Nov 2026): 25-second blocks and ZIP 235 fee removal. Later: Crosslink hybrid PoW/PoS finality (testnet in 2026, no mainnet date), Tachyon scaling, quantum resistance.

ZEC beat BTC and ETH by a wide margin over 12 months. Over 3 years it is up roughly +4,500% (from ~$27 in Oct 2023, researched by hand and approximate) vs BTC ~+179% and ETH ~+53%; 3-year figures are manual because the free CoinGecko API covers 365 days.

Flows
ZCSH had three straight days of outflows to 19 Oct (~$10.4M that day)
ATH check ATH check passed, narrowly. The $3,191.93 ATH is a launch-day print (28 Oct 2016, thin trading), but the 27 Sep 2026 close of $1,653 came back within 50% of it (−48%), so the launch-spike rule does not flag it. The Sep 2026 high is the more useful reference: price is −24% below it.

Tokenomics

Supply
~17.0M ZEC issued of a 21M cap (81%); FDV equals market cap, ~$21.4B.
Emissions
1.5625 ZEC per block since the Nov 2024 halving, ~1,800 ZEC a day or ~657k a year (~3.9% of supply). Next halving ~late 2028.
Unlocks
No vesting or unlock schedule: all new ZEC comes from block rewards. 80% to miners, 8% to Zcash Community Grants, 12% to a coinholder-controlled lockbox.
Utility
Money: fees, shielded payments, store of value. No staking today; Crosslink would add staking for finality.
Distribution
Fair-launch mining with a founders' reward in 2016–2020, then dev funds. The lockbox held ~64k ZEC in Sep 2026; Dragonfly's Haseeb Qureshi wants dev funding to end in 2028.
Sinks
None today beyond fees. NU7 removes 60% of fees from circulation (ZIP 235), to be reissued later. Grayscale ZCSH holds ZEC in custody.

Bull case

Private money becomes a lasting theme: shielded supply rises past 30%, NU7 ships cleanly on 5 Nov, and the Winklevoss ETF adds a second US buyer. ZEC holds the $1,126 October low and retakes $1,653, the Sep 2026 high.

Bear case

The rally fades like Nov 2025, when ZEC fell −72% in under four months; ETF outflows continue and exchanges restrict privacy coins. A loss of $1,126 opens the way to the ~$800 breakout level of late August.

Watch before the next re-run

  • NU7 mainnet height and a clean activation (target 5 Nov)
  • Shielded supply share and Orchard-to-Ironwood migration
  • ZCSH ETF flows and the Winklevoss WINK filing
  • Dev fund debate ahead of the 2028 halving; $1,126 support
