XPL

Plasma

Layer 1

A stablecoin-first chain with real dollar balances, but a token down 95% and a heavy monthly unlock schedule.

Unproven, unlock-heavy v1.1 · as of 2026-10-21 · framework v1.13 Coinsight · all analyses
Bottom line

Plasma built what it promised: a Tether-aligned chain where USD₮ transfers can be gas-free, with ~$1.4B of stablecoins on it and a Visa card app (Plasma One) since June 2026. The token has not benefited: XPL is −79% over a year and −95% from its launch-week high of $1.68, while chain fees are only hundreds of dollars a day. With team and investor unlocks now running at ~228M XPL a month and competitors such as Tempo and Circle's Arc live, the open question is whether anything forces demand for XPL itself.

How a USD₮ payment flows through Plasma

Sender
Sends USD₮

From a wallet or the Plasma One app; holds no XPL.

Paymaster
Sponsors the gas

Protocol paymaster pays fees for simple USD₮ transfers, with rate limits.

Validators
PlasmaBFT consensus

Validators order and finalise the block in seconds.

EVM layer
Balance updated

USD₮0 contract moves the balance like on Ethereum.

Card rails
Spend or hold

Plasma One card (Rain, Visa) pays merchants in local currency, or funds sit in DeFi.

Receiver
Gets dollars

Receives USD₮ or local currency via a merchant or off-ramp.

Where XPL comes in: it is bypassed in the main use case, because the paymaster pays gas for USD₮ sends. XPL is gas for other transactions (base fees burned), is staked by validators, and will be minted as validator rewards once delegation goes live. Plasma One also pays cashback in XPL, which adds sell-side supply.

Chain fees: ~$19.2k over 30 days (CoinStats, 1 Oct 2026) × 12. App fees: ~$166k in 24h on DefiLlama × 365; these go to apps such as lending markets, not to XPL holders. Unlocks: ~228M XPL a month (team and investor monthly tranches of 69.4M each plus 88.9M ecosystem) × 12 × $0.084. Validator rewards are not live yet. Fees cover about 0.1% of unlocked supply value.

    ~$0.5B

CoinStats, 1 Oct 2026; was ~$2.04B on 16 Apr 2026, over half of it one yield product (syrupUSDT). Incentive-driven.

CoinStats, Oct 2026. Includes sponsored zero-fee transfers; says little about value.

Plasma has real dollar balances, but its design makes the most common action free, so usage barely touches XPL. The scoreboard to watch is stablecoin supply and Plasma One spend against the ~228M XPL released every month.

Project

What it is
A Layer 1 built for stablecoin payments, live since 25 Sep 2025: EVM-compatible, gas-free USD₮ transfers through a protocol paymaster, custom gas tokens, and a planned Bitcoin bridge (pBTC).
Team
Led by co-founder and CEO Paul Faecks with a team of about 50 (Oct 2025). Backed by Founders Fund, Framework and Bitfinex, with close ties to Tether.
Technology
PlasmaBFT consensus plus an EVM execution layer. Simple USD₮ sends are sponsored, so users need no XPL; other transactions pay gas in XPL or a whitelisted token such as USD₮.
Traction
~$1.4B of stablecoins and ~$0.5B of DeFi TVL in early Oct 2026, down from a ~$2.04B TVL peak in April. Plasma One, a self-custodial Visa card app, launched 17 Jun 2026.
Competitors
Tron and Ethereum for USD₮ flows, plus new payment chains: Stripe's Tempo (live Mar 2026), Circle's Arc (live Sep 2026) and Stable.
Key risks
Fee capture is tiny by design; insider unlocks started in Sep 2026; dependence on Tether, Rain and Visa partners; launch-week insider-selling claims hurt trust.
Roadmap
External validators and stake delegation (which switch on 5% validator rewards) are announced but not live; pBTC bridge and wider Plasma One rollout are pending. No firm dates found.

XPL lost far more than BTC and ETH over 12 months. There is no 3-year return: trading began on 25 Sep 2025, so it cannot be set against the standard 3-year benchmarks of BTC ~+179% (from ~$29.7k) and ETH ~+53% (from ~$1.6k) (benchmarks researched by hand). Against the $0.05 public-sale price XPL is still up ~+68%.

Launch-spike ATH Launch-spike ATH. The $1.68 high came on day three (27 Sep 2025) and price was down to about $0.83, half of it, within a week; it has not come close since. The framework uses the post-launch 12-month high of about $0.40 as the reference instead.

Tokenomics

Supply
10B XPL created at launch; ~4.53B circulating (45%). Market cap $380M vs FDV $838M.
Inflation
Validator rewards start at 5% a year, falling 0.5% a year to 3%, but only once external validators and delegation go live; not active yet.
Unlocks
Team (25%) and investors (25%): one-third cliff on 25 Sep 2026, rest monthly over 2 years. Ecosystem (40%): monthly to ~Sep 2028. Together ~228M XPL (~$19M) a month.
Utility
Gas for non-sponsored transactions, validator staking, DeFi collateral, and Plasma One cashback (paid in XPL).
Concentration
Half of supply belongs to team and investors. On-chain trackers flagged large team-wallet moves at launch and 150M XPL sent to Binance in Jun 2026.
Sinks
EIP-1559 style burn of base fees on non-USD₮ transactions; with chain fees of a few hundred dollars a day the burn is negligible. No buybacks.

Bull case

Plasma One and Tether distribution turn the ~$1.4B stablecoin base into steady payment volume, staking launches and locks up a large share of supply, and monthly unlocks are absorbed. XPL holds the $0.061 June low and rerates toward the $0.21 January high.

Bear case

Insiders sell into each 25th-of-month unlock while Tempo and Arc take payment flows, and gas-free transfers keep fees near zero. XPL breaks the $0.061 low and slides further as circulating supply heads past 5B.

Watch before the next re-run

  • Stablecoin supply on Plasma vs Tempo and Arc (DefiLlama)
  • Exchange inflows around each monthly unlock on the 25th
  • Launch date of staking and delegation, and share of XPL staked
  • $0.061 June low and the $0.11 September rebound high
