VIRTUAL

Virtuals Protocol

AI

A launchpad and commerce layer for tokenized AI agents; busy product shipping, but the token sits 86% below its peak.

Speculative AI platform v1.1 · as of 2026-10-21 · framework v1.13 Coinsight · all analyses
Bottom line

Virtuals is the largest launchpad for tokenized AI agents and has spent the year adding an agent-to-agent payment layer (ACP), new chains such as Robinhood Chain, and a robotics arm. The VIRTUAL token held up better than BTC and ETH over 12 months (−11% vs −22% and −35%) but is still −86% from its January 2025 ATH and fell −71% from its November 2025 peak to the June low. Revenue is real but cyclical and tied to agent-token speculation, while the newer ACP payments settle in USDC and largely bypass VIRTUAL. It is a high-beta bet on the AI-agent narrative rather than an established cash-flow asset.

How an agent job flows through Virtuals' Agent Commerce Protocol

Buyer agent
Needs a task done

E.g. a trading agent wants a research report.

ACP registry
Finds a seller agent

Searches agents by ERC-8004 identity, skills and ratings.

Smart contract
Agree terms, escrow USDC

ERC-8183 job contract locks payment until delivery.

Seller agent
Delivers the work

Runs the job off-chain and posts the result.

Evaluator
Checks and releases

Evaluator agent approves; disputes go to UMA's oracle.

Protocol
Takes a 10% tax

Part buys back and burns the seller's agent token.

Where VIRTUAL comes in: every agent token launches and trades against VIRTUAL, and launch and trading fees accrue in it, so VIRTUAL demand follows agent-token speculation. In ACP itself payment is USDC and the buyback targets the agent's own token, so VIRTUAL is largely bypassed in the commerce step.

Revenue: $72.9M gross from Oct 2024 to Jul 2026 per Tokenomics.com, averaged to ~$42M a year; it is front-loaded in the late-2024 agent mania and recent months are lower (Fundstrat: launchpad fees cooled). Emission cap: 10% of the 350M ecosystem pool, 35M VIRTUAL at $0.70. Released: circulating rose only ~1.4M VIRTUAL in ~16 months, so dilution is minimal; revenue mostly goes to agent creators, treasury and agent-token buybacks rather than to VIRTUAL holders.

Virtuals has paying users, but the money comes mostly from trading new agent tokens, which rises and falls with AI-agent hype. ACP is the attempt at steady, real commerce; watch whether its fees grow and whether any of that value reaches VIRTUAL rather than USDC.

Project

What it is
A platform where anyone can launch an AI agent with its own token, paired with VIRTUAL, plus the Agent Commerce Protocol (ACP) through which agents hire and pay each other. Runs mainly on Base, with Ethereum, Solana, Arbitrum, Robinhood Chain and others.
Team
Co-founded by Jansen Teng (CEO) and Wee Kee Tiew, who started it as the gaming guild PathDAO in 2021 and pivoted to AI agents in January 2024; PATH was migrated to VIRTUAL.
Technology
ACP is an on-chain job flow (find, negotiate, pay, evaluate) co-developed into the ERC-8183 standard with the Ethereum Foundation's dAI team; agent identity uses ERC-8004 and disputes go to UMA's optimistic oracle. Eastworlds extends agents to robotics.
Traction
Self-reported ~$479M aGDP, 1.77M+ completed jobs and 18,000+ agents by March 2026; $200M+ agent trading volume and 5,600+ agents on Robinhood Chain in its first month (July). Fundstrat puts cumulative ACP gross fees near $4.5M by June.
Competitors
elizaOS (ai16z), Olas, Fetch.ai/ASI and Bittensor for agent infrastructure; pump.fun-style launchpads for token launches; x402 and other agent-payment rails.
Key risks
Revenue depends on speculative agent-token trading; usage figures are mostly self-reported; ACP pays in USDC so VIRTUAL captures little of it; ~342M VIRTUAL sit in the ecosystem treasury; the CEO said in late July that agent payments had not yet found product-market fit.
Roadmap
Invite-only iOS Virtuals App beta (Oct 2026) expected to open up; a law and governance layer for agent disputes is marked “coming soon” in the docs; further ACP chain expansion (BNB Chain, XLayer) and robotics via Eastworlds.

-35%

VIRTUAL beat BTC and ETH over 12 months, mostly because it started before the October 2025 x402 rally. Over 3 years the gain is very large but hard to pin down: in Oct 2023 the token still traded as PathDAO's PATH and CoinMarketCap lists the all-time low at $0.0076 (23 Jan 2024), so from roughly $0.01 the 3-year return is on the order of +5,000% or more, far ahead of BTC (+179% from ~$29.7k) and ETH (+53% from ~$1.6k). 3-year figures are manual and approximate because the free CoinGecko API covers 365 days.

Tokenomics

Supply
Fixed 1B VIRTUAL, no mining or inflation beyond the existing allocation. ~658M circulating (66%); market cap $459M vs FDV $698M.
Inflation/emissions
The 350M ecosystem allocation may emit at most 10% a year (≈35M) for the first three years, by governance. In practice circulating supply barely moved: ~657M (Jun 2025) to ~658M now.
Unlocks/vesting
No team or investor cliffs: 600M went to the public and 50M to liquidity. The remaining overhang is the ~342M treasury, which secondary trackers show releasing slowly through 2033.
Utility
Base pair for every agent token (bonding curves and pools), launch fees, and staking (veVIRTUAL) for launch allocations and votes. ACP job payments use USDC instead.
Concentration
The ecosystem treasury is about a third of supply and is controlled by the protocol; agent-token liquidity pools lock further VIRTUAL.
Sinks
Fees partly fund buybacks and burns of agent tokens (13M+ VIRTUAL deployed, e.g. GAME, AIXBT), not of VIRTUAL itself; VIRTUAL locked in agent pools is the main demand sink.

Bull case

ACP fees grow into a steady, non-speculative revenue line and Robinhood Chain, the app and robotics pull new users onto Virtuals; with emissions near zero, renewed agent-token demand lifts VIRTUAL back above the $0.86 October high and toward the $1.15 January high.

Bear case

Agent-token speculation fades again, launch fees shrink and ACP stays small and USDC-based, leaving VIRTUAL with little value capture; the treasury starts emitting toward its ~35M a year cap and price loses $0.65 to retest the $0.52 June low.

Watch before the next re-run

  • Monthly protocol revenue and ACP fees (Blockworks, Tokenomics.com)
  • Agent volume on Robinhood Chain and new chains
  • Ecosystem treasury releases vs the 10%-a-year cap
  • $0.52 June low as support; $0.86 and $1.15 as resistance
