TRON

Layer 1

The main rail for USDT, with real fee income, but most of the token sits with its founder.

Profitable, concentrated v1.1 · as of 2026-10-20 · framework v1.13 Coinsight · all analyses
Bottom line

TRON carries about $93B of USDT, roughly half of all USDT in circulation, and earns hundreds of millions of dollars in fees a quarter. TRX held up well: +3% over a year while BTC fell 25% and ETH 39%. The weak spots are the token itself: since the August 2025 fee cut, burn no longer covers new issuance, and Bloomberg attributes about 60B TRX (~63% of supply) to Justin Sun. TRX is a bet that USDT stays on TRON and that Sun's holdings stay put.

How a USDT transfer flows over TRON

Sender
Sends USDT (TRC-20)

From an exchange, OTC desk or wallet to another TRON address.

Resources
Pays in energy

Uses energy and bandwidth from staked TRX, or rented energy; if neither, TRX is burned.

Energy market
Stakers rent energy

Rental platforms sell stakers' energy to senders, usually cheaper than burning.

Super Representatives
Block in ~3 s

27 elected producers; final once 19 of them have built on top.

Tether contract
Balances update

The USDT smart contract moves the tokens; Tether can freeze addresses.

Receiver
Gets USDT

Holds it, pays onward, or cashes out on an exchange.

Where TRX comes in: every transfer needs energy, which comes from staked TRX or from burning TRX at 100 sun per unit. Since staking covers far more usage than burning, most fee value goes to stakers and renters rather than being burned, while ~3.9M new TRX a day is minted for producers and voters.

Q4 2025 burn is estimated from its reported net +25.1M and ~3.9M TRX minted per day. Q2 2026 net issuance was +30M (TRON DAO) to +87M (Messari); Q3 totals are not yet published. Before the August 2025 fee cut, burn usually exceeded issuance.

TRON's usage is real and paid: it earns hundreds of millions of dollars in fees a quarter from moving USDT. But since the 2025 fee cut most of that value goes to TRX stakers through energy, not to burning, so supply now grows slowly. The scoreboard is USDT on TRON and quarterly burned vs minted.

Project

What it is
A delegated proof-of-stake Layer 1 (mainnet 2018) with 3-second blocks and an EVM-compatible virtual machine (TVM). In practice it is the cheapest widely used rail for moving USDT between exchanges, OTC desks and wallets, especially in Asia, Africa and Latin America.
Team
Founded in 2017 by Justin Sun. Governance passed to TRON DAO in Dec 2021, but Sun is still the public face, a large holder and the main backer of Tron Inc., the Nasdaq-listed TRX treasury company.
Technology
27 elected Super Representatives produce blocks. Fees are paid with resources (energy and bandwidth) that users get by staking TRX, renting it from stakers, or burning TRX. Proposal 107 (28 Aug 2026) added Ethereum Prague/Osaka features to the TVM.
Traction
~$93.2B of USDT on TRON in mid-Oct 2026, the largest of any chain. $2.21T of stablecoin transfers in Q3 2026. Network fees of $699.4M in Q2 2026 (Messari), up 15.9% on the quarter.
Competitors
Ethereum and its Layer 2s, Solana, BNB Chain and TON for USDT transfers; new payment chains backed by stablecoin issuers (Plasma, Stable, Tempo) that offer zero-fee USDT.
Key risks
Founder concentration (~60B TRX per Bloomberg, disputed by Sun); a small, exchange-heavy validator set; dependence on one asset (USDT) and one issuer (Tether); USDT on TRON is widely used in sanctions and scam flows, which invites freezes and regulatory pressure.
Roadmap
Quantum-resistant signatures: Nile testnet live since July, mainnet now targeted for end of 2026 (slipped from Q3). Tron Inc. plans to become a Super Representative and keeps buying ~$50k of TRX a day.

Tokenomics

Supply
~95.0B TRX, no cap, all of it circulating (market cap equals FDV). Supply was flat in Q4 2025 (94.67B → 94.69B) and has crept up since.
Emissions
About 3.9M TRX a day goes to Super Representatives and their voters as block and vote rewards: ~352M a quarter, ~1.5% of supply a year before burns.
Unlocks
None. There is no vesting schedule; supply only changes through rewards minus burns.
Utility
Stake for energy and bandwidth (free transactions), vote for Super Representatives, or burn as gas. Staked energy is also rented out to USDT senders.
Concentration
Bloomberg (10 Aug 2025) attributed ~60B TRX, about 63% of supply, to Justin Sun, based on information his side gave in Feb 2025. Sun sued and lost a bid to block the story. Tron Inc. holds ~711M TRX more.
Sinks
Fee burn (smaller since the Aug 2025 cut to 100 sun per energy unit; staking covers about 7× more resource use than burning), staking (~48%), the Canary TRXS staked ETF (~$50M at launch) and Tron Inc. buying.

Bull case

USDT keeps growing on TRON past $100B and fee volume recovers to the Q2 2026 pace of ~$700M a quarter, pushing burn back above issuance. ETF and Tron Inc. buying absorb float; price breaks the $0.345 ceiling and retests the $0.375 May high.

Bear case

Zero-fee stablecoin chains and Ethereum Layer 2s pull USDT volume away, or Tether shifts issuance elsewhere. Net issuance widens, a large Sun-linked wallet moves to exchanges, and price loses the $0.315 floor toward the $0.269 February low.

Watch before the next re-run

  • USDT supply on TRON (DefiLlama) vs total USDT
  • Quarterly TRX minted vs burned (TRON DAO reports, Tronscan)
  • Large transfers from Sun-linked wallets; Tron Inc. holdings
  • $0.315 floor and $0.345 ceiling (daily closes since mid-June)
