TAO

Bittensor

AI

A network of competing AI subnets paid in TAO, now halved in issuance but still paying far more than it earns.

Subsidy-heavy, improving v1.2 · as of 2026-10-20 · framework v1.13 Coinsight · all analyses
Bottom line

Bittensor is the largest decentralised-AI network: 128 subnets compete for TAO emissions, and since dTAO each has its own alpha token. The December 2025 halving cut new supply to 3,600 TAO a day, yet over the last 12 months the network still paid out about $406M of TAO against an estimated $28–35M a year of external subnet revenue. The token is −35% over a year and −64% from its 2024 ATH, the April 2026 Covenant exit exposed how centralised governance still is, and a US spot ETF is filed but not yet confirmed listed. A high-risk bet that subnet revenue grows into the subsidy.

How an AI inference request flows through a Bittensor subnet

Customer
Calls an AI API

App pays a subnet's front end (e.g. Chutes, Targon) in dollars or crypto.

Validators
Route and score

Send the job to miners and grade the quality and speed of answers.

Miners
Run the model

Compete on GPUs; the best answers earn the most weight.

Yuma Consensus
Weights agreed on-chain

Validator scores are combined every tempo (~72 min) into miner rewards.

Subnet pool
Emissions paid in alpha

Chain injects TAO into the subnet pool and mints alpha for miners, validators and the owner.

Subnet owner
Revenue buys back alpha

Many subnets use customer revenue to buy their alpha token in the TAO pool.

Where TAO comes in: new TAO (3,600 a day) is minted into subnet pools in proportion to TAO staked into them, so TAO is the reserve asset behind every alpha token. Customers usually pay subnets off-chain and never touch TAO; demand reaches TAO only when revenue buys alpha in the TAO pools or someone stakes. Registration fees are recycled, not burned.

Emitted = ~1.51M TAO (7,200 a day to 14 Dec 2025, 3,600 a day since) valued at each day's CoinGecko close, ~$269 on average. Revenue is an annualised run-rate from late Aug 2026: SubConnect's index of 24 subnets with paying customers (mostly self-reported), and Artemis's on-chain figure cited by FalconX. Revenue covers roughly 4–9% of emissions; Pine Analytics' bear case puts verifiable revenue as low as $3–15M.

Bittensor has more real revenue than most AI tokens, but the network still pays roughly ten or more dollars of new TAO for each dollar subnets earn. The scoreboard is subnet revenue and buybacks against the ~$1M a day of emissions.

Project

What it is
An open network where subnets (independent AI markets for inference, compute, training, data and more) reward miners and validators in TAO. Since dTAO (Feb 2025) each subnet has its own alpha token traded against TAO in an on-chain pool.
Team
Started in 2019 by Jacob Steeves and Ala Shaabana; the Opentensor Foundation maintains the chain (subtensor). Steeves stepped down as Opentensor CEO in Feb 2026 but stays a core developer and still holds decisive influence.
Technology
Yuma Consensus lets validators score miners' work; emissions flow to subnets by TAO staked into their pools. Conviction (lock-based) subnet ownership arrived in 2026; Null Consensus (announced 16 Oct) lifts subnet capacity from 256 to 2,500 participants and adds proof-of-work registration.
Traction
128 subnets; 24 earn external revenue, est. $28–35M a year (Lium SN51 $8–10M, Targon SN4 $5.5–6M, Chutes SN64 $4–5M); 14 use it to buy back their alpha tokens. Revenue estimates are mostly self-reported.
Competitors
Centralised AI clouds (OpenAI, AWS, Together) on price and quality; decentralised compute and AI networks such as Akash, Render, io.net and Gensyn.
Key risks
Emissions dwarf revenue; governance still sits with Steeves and a small multisig (Covenant AI left in April 2026 calling it “decentralization theatre” and sold ~37k TAO of alpha); subnets that farm emissions without customers.
Roadmap
Null Consensus rollout (announced, no date); Gamma tokens for subnets to pay each other (proposed Sept 2026, still conceptual); 256 subnet slots discussed; handover to decentralised governance targeted for Dec 2027; Grayscale GTAO's NYSE Arca uplisting pending SEC.

Tokenomics

Supply
21M max, Bitcoin-style. ~11.34M circulating (CoinGecko), so ~54% issued; FDV $5.77B vs $3.11B market cap.
Emissions
First halving ~14 Dec 2025 cut issuance from 1 to 0.5 TAO per block (7,200 → 3,600 TAO a day). Next halving at 15.75M issued, around 2029. ~1.51M TAO (~$406M) emitted over the last 12 months.
Unlocks
No VC or team unlock schedule: there was no premine, all TAO is emitted. New supply goes to subnet owners, miners, validators and stakers, who are the main sellers.
Utility
Staking into subnet pools (buys alpha) and the root network, subnet and miner registration, fees, and the price of every alpha token, which is quoted in TAO.
Concentration
Fair launch, but large validators and early miners hold much of the supply; ~20% of circulating TAO is staked into subnets (FalconX). Treasury firm TAO Synergies held 54k+ TAO by Oct 2025.
Sinks
Registration fees are recycled into the unissued pool, not burned, which only delays issuance. Subnet alpha buybacks, Grayscale's GTAO trust (OTC) and Safello's staked TAO ETP on SIX absorb some supply.

Bull case

Subnet revenue keeps compounding from ~$30M toward $100M+ a year while issuance stays at 3,600 TAO a day, Null Consensus and Gamma tokens let subnets trade with each other, and a US spot ETF listing brings new buyers; TAO reclaims $345 and then the $498 pre-halving high.

Bear case

Revenue stays below a tenth of the ~$400M of yearly emissions, more builders leave over governance as Covenant did, and the ETF stays stuck in filing; TAO loses $200 and retests the $152 February low.

Watch before the next re-run

  • Subnet external revenue vs TAO emitted (SubConnect index, Artemis): is the gap closing?
  • Grayscale GTAO NYSE Arca listing and Bitwise's TAO filing
  • Null Consensus rollout and progress on the Dec 2027 governance handover
  • $200 support (summer closes) and the $345 2026 high
