Polygon

Layer 2

Ethereum-linked payments chain buying its way into regulated US money flows while its token keeps sliding.

Pivot under pressure v1.1 · as of 2026-10-21 · framework v1.13 Coinsight · all analyses
Bottom line

Polygon is turning itself into a payments and stablecoin network: Polygon Labs closed the Coinme acquisition (37 US money transmitter licenses) in October and launched the Open Money Stack, and the foundation burned or is burning 100M POL from collected fees. The token has not benefited: −50% over a year, −66% from the October 2025 high and about −83% over three years. The biggest near-term risk is Polymarket, the chain's largest app, moving to its own chain while POL supply still grows about 2% a year.

How a stablecoin payment flows over Polygon

Sender
Pays in USD

Business or app user starts a payment through an Open Money Stack partner.

On-ramp
Cash in to USDC

A licensed ramp such as Coinme converts dollars to a stablecoin.

Wallet
Signs the transfer

Embedded wallet sends USDC on Polygon PoS; gas is paid in POL, often by a relayer.

Validators
Block finalized

POL-staked validators produce and finalize the block in seconds; checkpoints go to Ethereum.

Agglayer
Routes cross-chain

If the receiver is on another chain, liquidity is routed without a classic bridge.

Receiver
Gets paid

Keeps USDC or cashes out to local currency through an off-ramp.

Where POL comes in: every transaction pays gas in POL; the base fee goes to a collector contract that is now burned, and priority fees go to validators. Validators stake POL and earn half of the 2% yearly emission. The payment itself is in stablecoins, so the sender and receiver can bypass POL entirely.

Usage and adoption

USD, 2026 to mid-September (~8.5 months)
Protocol revenue (CEO claim)
~$24.5M
New POL emitted (~142M POL)
~$13.5M

Revenue is Sandeep Nailwal's 2026 figure (Sep 2026, not independently verified; DefiLlama reportedly shows a similar ~$25M). Emissions are 2% a year on 10B POL pro-rated to 8.5 months, valued at the 2026 average daily close of ~$0.095. Revenue includes base fees that feed the 100M POL burn, so the burn is not added separately. Much of the fee base comes from Polymarket activity.

Polygon earns real fees, and in 2026 they appear to exceed the dollar value of new POL. The catch is concentration: much of that fee base is Polymarket. Watch whether stablecoin payments from Coinme and the Open Money Stack replace it before Polymarket leaves.

Project

What it is
Polygon PoS: an EVM chain that checkpoints to Ethereum, now positioned as a payments and real-world-asset settlement network. POL (ex-MATIC, migrated 1:1 in Sep 2024) pays gas and secures it via staking.
Team
Co-founded by Sandeep Nailwal, now CEO of the Polygon Foundation; Marc Boiron is CEO of Polygon Labs, which builds the payments products.
Technology
Bor/Heimdall PoS chain on a 'Gigagas' roadmap toward 100k TPS; 2026 hardforks (Lisovo, Giugliano, Chicago) changed base fees and sped up finality. Agglayer connects chains to share liquidity.
Traction
~$3.04B in stablecoins and ~5.7M transactions a day (Aug 2026, secondary). Open Money Stack bundles on/off-ramps, wallets and settlement; early customers include Tazapay, Mesh, Toku and Kira.
Competitors
Base, Arbitrum and other Ethereum L2s; Solana and Tron for stablecoin payments; Stripe's and Circle's own payment chains.
Key risks
Polymarket, the largest fee source, has said it will migrate to its own chain; the chain had outages (reported 18 Dec); token value depends on fees that Polygon Labs' payments business may not route through POL.
Roadmap
Polymarket migration (timing unconfirmed); quarterly community-triggered base-fee burns; Gigagas push toward 100k TPS; an open forum proposal to end or taper the 2% inflation, not yet voted.

POL fell more than BTC and ETH over 12 months. Over 3 years it is down about −83% (from roughly $0.55 for MATIC in late Oct 2023, researched by hand and approximate), against BTC ~+179% (from ~$29.7k) and ETH ~+53% (from ~$1.6k).

Relative strength
−50% in a year vs BTC −22% and ETH −35%; burn news lifted it to $0.12 (28 Sep), then it gave back the gain
ATH check ATH check passed. CoinGecko's $1.29 high (13 Mar 2024) comes from MATIC price history carried over by the 1:1 migration, not a launch spike; MATIC's own peak was ~$2.88 in Dec 2021.

Tokenomics

Supply
10B POL at the 2023 upgrade; ~10.64B now (CoinGecko), all circulating. No max supply.
Inflation
2% of the initial supply a year (~200M POL), split evenly between validator staking rewards and a community treasury.
Unlocks/vesting
No VC cliffs left; new float comes from emissions and treasury spending, about 16.7M POL a month.
Utility
Gas on Polygon PoS, staking by validators and delegators, governance; planned role in Agglayer. Stablecoin users often never touch POL.
Concentration
Half of new supply goes to a treasury steered by the foundation; whales sold over 30M POL into the September rally.
Sinks
EIP-1559 base fees collect in a contract (~121M POL in Sep 2026); 100M POL burned via a permissionless contract (reported 23 Sep), with quarterly community burns after.

Bull case

Coinme's licenses and the Open Money Stack bring steady US payment volume onto Polygon PoS, base-fee burns keep pace with the ~200M POL yearly emission, and the forum proposal to taper inflation passes. POL holds the $0.09 area and retakes the $0.12 September high, then the $0.18 January high.

Bear case

Polymarket migrates and fee revenue drops sharply, so burns shrink while 2% inflation continues. Payments growth runs on stablecoins with gas abstracted away, leaving POL a passenger; price loses $0.09 and retests the $0.069 July low.

Watch before the next re-run

  • Polymarket migration date and Polygon fee revenue after it
  • Size of each quarterly base-fee burn vs ~50M POL emitted per quarter
  • Payment volume through Coinme and the Open Money Stack
  • $0.069 July low and the $0.12 September high
