NEAR is one of the few large tokens up over the past year: +118% (BTC −25%, ETH −38%) and +226% since 1 January. Part of that rests on paid usage, because NEAR Intents moved ~$10.4B in Q3 and its fees have bought back over $8M of NEAR since February. The rest is narrative and flows: an AI-agent story, a short squeeze in May and the first US spot NEAR ETF in late September. Buybacks still cover only about a fifth of new issuance, so the rally needs the 1.6% issuance cut and faster fee growth to look cheap rather than stretched.

1
30 Oct 25Inflation halved to 2.5%. Validators adopted nearcore 2.9.0, cutting maximum issuance from 5% to 2.5% a year.
2
03 Dec 25NEAR AI Cloud launches. Private, enclave-based AI inference with an OpenAI-compatible API; Brave's Leo assistant runs on it.

26 May 26Short squeeze to $2.76. A ~54% week on liquidations, AI-token rotation and Arthur Hayes naming NEAR a top altcoin.
6
03 Aug 26Sovereign Fund proposed. Polosukhin proposes funding security from treasury yield, as a path toward fixed supply.

8
01 Oct 26$3.8M Intents exploit. An Omni bridge bug drained ~$3.8M on BNB Chain; services paused ~12 hours and the funds came back.
9
Soon1.6% issuance cut decision. HSP-029 needs House of Stake and validator approval; the 24-month ramp starts after a 90-day grace period.

How a cross-chain swap flows through NEAR Intents
User
Asks for a swap
In near.com or a partner wallet: e.g. BTC on Bitcoin into USDC on Solana.
→
Intent
Signed request
The wallet signs an intent stating what the user wants, not how to route it.
→
Solvers
Compete to fill it
Market makers quote; the best price wins the order.
→
NEAR contract
Settles atomically
The Intents contract on NEAR swaps balances in one step, or nothing happens.
→
Chain signatures
Pays out on Solana
MPC nodes and the Omni bridge release USDC on the destination chain.
→
Protocol
Takes a small fee
Part of the fee is used to buy NEAR on the open market.
Where NEAR comes in: settlement gas on NEAR is paid in NEAR (small, partly burned), stakers secure the chain that runs the Intents contract, and Intents fees are turned into NEAR buybacks. The user can complete the whole swap without touching NEAR, so value reaches the token through buybacks and staking demand, not through users holding it.

Intents buybacks

New NEAR issued
~$69M
Issued, at today's $4.93
~$158M
Buybacks: over $8M of Intents fees spent on NEAR in ~240 days, annualised (Oct 2026 report). Issuance: 2.5% of ~1.31B ≈ 32M NEAR a year, valued at the $2.14 average daily close since 23 Feb; at today's price the same issuance is worth ~$158M. Buybacks cover roughly a fifth of new supply, in line with SVRN's estimate that issuance runs about six times buybacks. Estimates; actual issuance can sit slightly below the maximum.

Intents fees to buybacks
$8M+ since Feb
Protocol share of swap fees, spent on NEAR at market. Users pay these fees, so this is the cleanest value-accrual signal.

Intents cumulative fees

Spot ETF flows

medium signal
Intents volume
~$10.4B in Q3
+67% on Q2; ~$32B all-time. Volume, not revenue: it shows demand for the swap rail.
weak signal
L1 network fees
Small
About $3.2M in fees year-to-date in Oct 2025 vs ~$140M of yearly issuance then (Blockworks).
NEAR's rally rests partly on paid usage: Intents is a real, growing swap business whose fees buy NEAR. But the price rose far faster than fees, and the timing of the big moves (May squeeze, September ETF) points to flows and the AI narrative. The scoreboard to watch is monthly Intents buybacks against monthly issuance.
Project
What it is
A proof-of-stake layer 1 (mainnet 2020) with sharding and named accounts. Since 2025 its main product is NEAR Intents: a cross-chain swap and settlement layer across 30+ chains, plus near.com, a consumer app built on it.
Team
Co-founded by Illia Polosukhin (a co-author of the 2017 transformer paper) and Alexander Skidanov. NEAR Foundation funds the ecosystem; NEAR One builds the core client; NEAR AI builds private inference and agent tools. Helius CEO Mert Mumtaz joined the Foundation council on 14 Oct 2026.
Technology
Chain abstraction: users state what they want (an intent), solvers compete to fill it, and a NEAR contract settles it. MPC chain signatures let NEAR sign on Bitcoin, Ethereum and others. NEAR AI Cloud runs models inside hardware enclaves; Brave's Leo assistant uses it.
Traction
Intents passed $20B cumulative volume on 3 Jun and ~$32B by 19 Oct 2026; Q3 volume was ~$10.4B (+67% on Q2). Cumulative Intents fees are about $52M to $55M depending on the tracker.
Competitors
Cross-chain routers and bridges (THORChain, LI.FI, Across, deBridge), centralised exchanges, fast layer 1s such as Solana and Sui, and AI-crypto networks such as Bittensor.
Key risks
Issuance still runs ~5 to 6 times buybacks; swap users never need to hold NEAR; a $3.8M Intents exploit on 1 Oct (funds returned); the move leans on ETF flows and the AI narrative; 24h volume is unusually high at ~16% of market cap.
Roadmap
Not yet launched: HSP-029 issuance ramp to 1.6% (needs House of Stake and validator approval, then a 90-day grace period); Polosukhin's Sovereign Fund (~30M NEAR treasury plus revenue) as a path to fixed supply, still in discussion; near.com bank withdrawals, tax records, selective disclosure and more tokenised stocks; an AI-side fee switch suggested by Bitwise but not announced.

Tokenomics
Supply
~1.31B NEAR, all of it circulating according to CoinGecko (FDV equals market cap). No maximum supply; genesis was 1B in 2020.
Inflation
Maximum issuance halved from 5% to 2.5% a year on 30 Oct 2025; ~32M NEAR a year, 90% to stakers and validators, 10% to the protocol treasury. HSP-029 would ramp it to 1.6% over 24 months (staking yield ~5.3% to ~3.4%).
Unlocks/vesting
No large scheduled unlocks are listed; early investor and team allocations have vested. New float now comes mainly from issuance and Foundation or treasury spending.
Utility
Gas and storage deposits on NEAR, staking for security, veNEAR voting in the House of Stake, and the asset Intents fees are used to buy. Users of Intents and near.com can swap without ever holding NEAR.
Concentration
Large holders include treasury company SVRN (~56M NEAR, ~4%), the protocol treasury (~30M), the Bitwise ETF (~15.8M on 12 Oct) and the NEAR Foundation (amount not disclosed).
Sinks
Since 23 Feb 2026 Intents fees buy NEAR on the market (over $8M by 19 Oct), held rather than burned. Part of L1 gas is burned, but L1 fees are small. Staking, the ETF and SVRN absorb further supply.
Bull case
Intents keeps growing at Q3's pace, buybacks rise toward the size of issuance, and HSP-029 cuts issuance toward 1.6%. ETF inflows continue, NEAR holds the ~$4.60 support and breaks the $5.89 high from 12 Oct.
Bear case
ETF inflows fade and the AI narrative cools while issuance keeps outrunning buybacks ~5 to 1. Another Intents incident or a failed issuance vote sends NEAR back toward $2.47, its close on 15 Sep before the ETF rally.
