MORPHO

Morpho

DeFi

A fast-growing DeFi lending network behind Coinbase loans, whose token still earns nothing from its fees.

Strong, fee switch off v1.1 · as of 2026-10-21 · framework v1.13 Coinsight · all analyses
Bottom line

Morpho has become the second-largest DeFi lender (~$11B TVL) and the credit engine behind Coinbase's bitcoin-backed loans, Circle's Arc and a growing list of institutions, with Apollo and a $175M round from Paradigm, a16z and Ribbit behind it. The token rose +29% in a year while BTC fell −22% and ETH −35%, and is up +119% this year. The catch is value accrual: borrowers pay hundreds of millions a year in interest, but the fee switch is off, so MORPHO holders receive nothing, while about 30% of supply is still to unlock through 2028.

Q4 26 Vote: vaults into Midnight. DAO expected to let Morpho Vaults allocate to Midnight, opening it to billions in deposits.

How a Coinbase bitcoin-backed loan runs through Morpho

Borrower
Asks Coinbase for a USDC loan

Pledges BTC in the Coinbase app; no DeFi interface.

Coinbase
Wraps BTC as cbBTC on Base

Deposits it as collateral in a Morpho Blue market.

Morpho Blue
Isolated cbBTC/USDC market

Fixed loan-to-value and oracle; interest rate set by utilization.

Vault
Curated vault supplies USDC

Depositors' USDC, allocated by a curator such as Steakhouse or Gauntlet.

Borrower
Receives USDC, pays interest

Interest flows to vault depositors, minus the curator's fee.

Liquidator
Steps in if BTC falls

Repays debt and seizes collateral once the LTV limit is crossed.

Where MORPHO comes in: nowhere in the loan itself. Fees, collateral and interest are all in cbBTC and USDC. MORPHO only governs the protocol: it can turn on a fee switch that would skim part of the interest, and it votes on changes such as letting vaults use Midnight.

Borrower interest is DefiLlama's 30-day fees (~$21.6M) times 12; altFINS put 30-day fees at $36.5M on 31 Aug, so the true figure may be higher. All of it goes to lenders and curators, none to the token. Vesting is ~110M MORPHO a year (21.9% of supply vesting linearly through 2027–28) at $2.39. Apollo cap: 90M over 48 months at $2.39.

Morpho's usage is real and growing: borrowers pay hundreds of millions a year in interest, and large platforms route loans through it. For the token the scoreboard is different: until the fee switch is on, MORPHO captures none of that, and vesting adds roughly as much in dollar terms each year as borrowers pay in fees.

Project

What it is
A lending protocol on Ethereum, Base and other chains. Morpho Blue offers small, isolated, immutable lending markets; Morpho Vaults pool deposits and spread them across markets chosen by outside curators; Midnight (2026) adds fixed-rate, fixed-term loans.
Team
Built by Morpho Labs in Paris (co-founder and CEO Paul Frambot); the non-profit Morpho Association and the Morpho DAO govern the token and treasury. Raised $175M in June 2026, co-led by Paradigm, a16z crypto and Ribbit Capital.
Differentiation
Minimal, immutable core with risk pushed to curators (Steakhouse, Gauntlet, Bitwise, Galaxy and others). Other firms embed it as back-end infrastructure: Coinbase loans run on Morpho on Base, and Morpho is the credit layer of Circle's Arc chain.
Traction
~$11B TVL, #2 lending protocol on DefiLlama. Coinbase customers have ~$1.6B of USDC borrowed against cbBTC (19 Oct). Arc deposits passed $500M by 2 Oct, about two weeks after launch.
Competitors
Aave (the leader by far), Euler, Spark, Kamino on Solana, and fixed-rate rivals such as Pendle-based markets.
Key risks
Curator mistakes can still hurt depositors, as the Nov 2025 Stream Finance collapse showed (~$0.7M bad debt in one vault). No fee switch yet, so token value rests on governance and future plans. Insiders and VCs hold large allocations still vesting.
Roadmap
Morpho Vaults can only allocate to Morpho Blue today; the DAO is expected to enable vault allocations to Midnight in Q4 2026 (one governance transaction). Fee switch activation is listed as a future governance item but has no vote date.

MORPHO beat BTC and ETH by more than 50 points over 12 months. Since the $4.17 ATH (17 Jan 2025) it is still −43%.

ATH check ATH check passed. The $4.17 high (17 Jan 2025) came 57 days after the token became transferable, so it is a launch-period peak, but price came back within 50% of it: $2.90 in Aug 2026 and $2.39 now. The ATH is used as the reference.

Tokenomics

Supply
1B MORPHO fixed maximum, all minted. ~703M circulating (70%); FDV $2.39B vs $1.68B market cap.
Inflation/emissions
No protocol inflation. New float comes from vesting and from DAO-funded user rewards.
Unlocks/vesting
Founders (15.2%) and strategic cohort 3 (6.7%) vest linearly, fully by 17 May 2028 at the latest: roughly 9M MORPHO a month from these two groups alone.
Utility
Governance only: the DAO controls the treasury, the fee switch and the token contract. No staking or fee share today.
Concentration
DAO 35.4%, strategic partners 27.5%, founders 15.2%, Morpho Association 6.3%, contributors 5.8%, users and early contributors 4.9% each.
Sinks
No burn and no buyback. Apollo may buy up to 90M MORPHO over 48 months (from Feb 2026), the only committed demand.

Bull case

The DAO enables Midnight in vaults and later turns on the fee switch, so a slice of $250M+ a year in interest starts flowing to MORPHO. Coinbase, Arc and institutional vaults keep growing deposits past $11B, Apollo keeps buying, and price retakes the $2.90 August high on the way back toward the $4.17 ATH.

Bear case

The fee switch stays off, so MORPHO remains a governance token while ~9M tokens a month vest to founders and partners. A curator blow-up like Stream Finance dents trust, and price loses the $2.08 September low and slides toward the $1.07 February low.

Watch before the next re-run

  • DAO vote enabling vault allocations to Midnight (expected Q4 2026)
  • Any fee switch proposal and how revenue would reach MORPHO holders
  • Coinbase loan book and Arc deposits; curator incidents
  • $2.08 support (Sep low), $2.90 Aug high and the $4.17 ATH
