LIT

Lighter

Exchange

A zk-proven perpetuals exchange on Ethereum that burns its fees into LIT, with half the supply still locked.

Growing, cliff ahead v1.1 · as of 2026-10-21 · framework v1.13 Coinsight · all analyses
Bottom line

Lighter is one of the three largest on-chain perpetuals venues, profitable, backed by Founders Fund and Robinhood, and plugged into Robinhood Wallet since July. LIT is up +56% in 2026 after falling −74% into a $0.81 low in March, and fee-funded buybacks now burn supply. The catch is timing: 500M LIT held by the team and investors start vesting after a cliff around 27 Dec 2026, which is far more than the burn removes. Today's +22% jump rests on a plan to apply for a US CFTC licence in November, which is not yet filed.

How a perpetuals trade flows through Lighter

Trader
Deposits USDC

From Ethereum, Robinhood Chain or via Robinhood Wallet into the Lighter rollup.

Order book
Places an order

Retail accounts trade free; premium and API accounts pay fees.

Sequencer
Matches and risk-checks

Matching, margin and liquidations run off-chain at exchange speed.

Prover
Proves the batch

Zero-knowledge proofs show matching and liquidations followed the rules.

Ethereum
Verifies and settles

Proofs and state land on L1; users can exit even if Lighter stops.

Treasury
Fees buy LIT

Revenue buys LIT by daily TWAP; bought tokens are burned.

Where LIT comes in: traders never need LIT to trade, and fees are paid in USDC. LIT enters through the buyback and burn, staking for fee tiers and yield, and the stake required to deposit into the LLP vault. Value accrual depends on fee revenue, not on usage of the token itself.

Usage and adoption

LIT per year: buyback burn vs insider vesting after the cliff
Bought back and burned (run rate)
~30.6M
Burned so far (10 Jul 2026)

Team + investor vesting from Dec 2026
~167M

Today LIT is net deflationary because no insider tokens unlock yet. From the late-December cliff, 500M LIT vest over 3 years (~167M a year), about 5x the burn pace Tokenomist estimated in July 2026 (net ~+136M LIT a year). The burn in LIT depends on revenue and price: a higher LIT price buys fewer tokens. Sources: Tokenomist (Jul 2026), Invezz and BeInCrypto on the 10 Jul burn.

30-day share vs Hyperliquid ~68% and Aster ~15% (DefiLlama, mid-2026). Volume is partly points-driven.

Lighter has real paying users and a working burn, but fees have fallen from the late-2025 airdrop-farming peak, and the burn is small next to the insider supply that starts vesting in two months.

Project

What it is
A decentralized exchange for perpetual futures, built as an app-specific zk rollup on Ethereum. Order matching and liquidations are proven with zero-knowledge proofs, so users can verify them; funds settle on Ethereum (and since 2026 also on Robinhood Chain).
Team
Founded in 2022 by CEO Vladimir Novakovski, who pivoted his previous company Lunchclub and kept most of its team. Raised $68M in Nov 2025 led by Founders Fund and Ribbit Capital, with Haun Ventures and Robinhood, at a reported ~$1.5B valuation.
Differentiation
Verifiable matching instead of a trusted off-chain engine, zero trading fees for retail accounts (paid fees come from premium and API traders), and distribution through Robinhood Wallet and Robinhood Chain.
Traction
~13% of 30-day perp DEX volume (DefiLlama, mid-2026); open interest ~$1.37B and ~$5.4B average daily volume (Blockworks, undated). Robinhood order flow was 17% of daily volume in September. Fees ~$4.41M in 30 days (early Sep).
Competitors
Hyperliquid (still ~68% of 30-day perp DEX volume), Aster, edgeX, Paradex and dYdX on-chain; Binance, Bybit and Coinbase off-chain.
Key risks
Insider cliff in late Dec 2026; monthly revenue fell from ~$24M (Nov 2025) to ~$13M (Jan 2026) and lower since; volume partly driven by points incentives; US perps hopes not yet backed by a filing.
Roadmap
CFTC derivatives licence application planned for November 2026 (Q3 investor call), aiming to be the first CFTC-approved on-chain perps DEX; new derivative products across asset classes and more chains (Nov 2025 raise).

LIT has traded for under 10 months, so its figure runs from the first daily close ($2.73, 30 Dec 2025); BTC and ETH are 1-year returns. There is no 3-year return for LIT; for reference, the standard 3-year benchmarks are BTC ~+179% (from ~$29.7k) and ETH ~+53% (from ~$1.6k), researched by hand.

Relative strength

ATH check ATH check passed. The $7.86 intraday high came on launch day (30 Dec 2025), but daily closes reached $5.32 on 24 Sep 2026, within 50% of it, so the launch-spike rule does not apply. Price is now −50% from the ATH.

Tokenomics

Supply
1B LIT fixed maximum; 250M (25%) circulating, all from the launch airdrop, which unlocked in full.
Inflation/emissions
No scheduled emissions today. A further 25% ecosystem reserve (points, partnerships, growth) has no published release schedule.
Unlocks/vesting
Team (26%) and investors (24%), 500M LIT in all, are locked until a one-year cliff around 27 Dec 2026, then vest linearly over 3 years: ~167M LIT a year, or ~$650M at today's price. Trackers differ on the exact first date.
Utility
Staking (fixed 6% APR, 3-day unstake), required stake to deposit into the LLP liquidity vault (1 LIT per 10 USDC), fee tiers and governance.
Concentration
Half of supply sits with insiders; the float is entirely airdrop recipients. Robinhood is both an equity investor and a distribution partner.
Sinks
Protocol revenue buys LIT through daily TWAPs; since 1 Jul 2026 bought tokens are burned. 15.6M LIT burned on 10 Jul; Tokenomist estimated ~30.6M LIT a year at the mid-2026 pace.

Bull case

A CFTC application in November and growing Robinhood flow lift fees back toward the late-2025 level of ~$24M a month, so buybacks absorb a large part of the vesting. LIT holds above the $3.03 October low and retakes the $5.32 September high.

Bear case

Insider tokens start vesting around 27 Dec 2026 at ~167M LIT a year, about five times the burn, while fees keep fading as points incentives end. LIT loses $3.03 and revisits the $1.85 to $2.07 range of early July, or worse.
