LINK

Chainlink

Oracle

The leading oracle and cross-chain network; usage keeps growing, but token releases still outpace buying.

Leader, heavy dilution v1.2 · as of 2026-10-20 · framework v1.13 Coinsight · all analyses
Bottom line

Chainlink remains the default data and cross-chain layer for DeFi and tokenization: CCIP 2.0 went live on 28 Sep 2026, the Runtime Environment (CRE) has been live since Nov 2025, and a revenue-funded Chainlink Reserve now holds ~6.29M LINK. The token has not followed: −34% over a year and −77% below its 2021 high. The core problem is supply: ~70M LINK moved out of team-controlled supply in 12 months, roughly twelve times what the Reserve bought.

How a cross-chain token transfer flows through Chainlink CCIP

Institution or app
Requests a transfer

E.g. moves tokenized fund shares from Ethereum to an L2 via the CCIP router.

Fee
Pays in LINK or other tokens

LINK is cheaper; gas tokens or stablecoins also accepted.

Source chain
Tokens locked or burned

The token's pool locks or burns the amount being sent.

Node operators
Verify and sign

Chainlink's operator network checks the message; CCIP 2.0 lets the institution add its own verifiers and compliance rules.

Destination chain
Tokens released or minted

The receiver gets the tokens once finality and checks pass.

Payment Abstraction
Fees converted to LINK

Non-LINK fees are swapped into LINK; part goes to the Chainlink Reserve.

Where LINK comes in: fees can be paid in LINK directly, and fees paid in other tokens are converted to LINK through Payment Abstraction, feeding the Reserve. Node operators and community stakers lock LINK as collateral. Enterprise deals paid off-chain in fiat bypass LINK unless Chainlink converts that revenue, which is the core value-accrual question.

The Reserve, funded from service revenue converted to LINK, grew from ~0.42M LINK (2 Oct 2025) to ~6.29M (mid-Oct 2026), so it absorbed about 8% of the new float. Released = change in CoinGecko circulating supply, 696.7M (21 Oct 2025) to 766.8M (20 Oct 2026), matching four quarterly releases. The staking budget (~2.03M a year, secondary source) is paid out of released supply and shown for scale.

    Reserve purchases
    ~431,900 LINK / 30 days

  • medium signal

    10.03M LINK (GLNK)

30 Jun 2026 10-Q; a Bitwise ETF also trades. Direct LINK demand, but flows were mixed in October.

  • weak signal

    ~$27–30T

Cumulative transaction value since launch; secondary sources disagree and the method is Chainlink's own.

Chainlink's network usage is broad and growing, but the LINK scoreboard is Reserve purchases against releases from team-controlled supply. Over the last year buying covered only ~8% of new float; that ratio needs to rise for usage to show up in the price.

Project

What it is
A decentralized oracle network that delivers price data, proof of reserve and other off-chain data to blockchains, plus CCIP for moving tokens and messages between chains and CRE for running multi-chain workflows.
Team
Chainlink Labs, co-founded by Sergey Nazarov and Steve Ellis; mainnet since 2019. Nazarov joined the CFTC's Innovation Advisory Committee (Feb 2026) and spoke at a Federal Reserve fintech conference in Sep 2026.
Technology
Independent node-operator networks sign each data update or cross-chain message. CCIP 2.0 (28 Sep 2026) lets institutions add their own verifiers, compliance controls and configurable finality; CRE (live 4 Nov 2025) orchestrates workflows across chains and bank systems.
Traction
Secures ~$33B in DeFi (DefiLlama, May 2026). CCIP spans 80+ networks and $84B+ of cross-chain token value (Sep 2026); Lido added CCIP on 15 Oct. Banks and market infrastructure (Swift, DTCC, UBS) ran pilots in 2025; how much of that is in paid production is not public.
Competitors
Pyth, RedStone, Chronicle and API3 for oracle data; LayerZero, Wormhole and Axelar for cross-chain messaging.
Key risks
Steady quarterly releases from team-controlled supply; much enterprise revenue is paid off-chain, so LINK demand is hard to measure; no named institution yet uses the new CCIP 2.0 verifiers (CoinDesk, Sep 2026).
Roadmap
Confidential Compute (private workflows on CRE) is due for general availability, reportedly by end-2026 (not confirmed by Chainlink); staking v0.3 has no announced date; institutional verifier adopters for CCIP 2.0 still to be named.

Tokenomics

Supply
1B LINK fixed at launch (2017), none minted since. ~766.8M circulating (77%).
Emissions
No protocol inflation. New float comes from team-controlled non-circulating wallets: ~70M LINK in 12 months (CoinGecko circulating 696.7M → 766.8M), about 10% of the float.
Unlocks
Quarterly releases of ~11M to ~21M LINK: ~11M (Q4 2025), 19M (4 Apr), ~21M (20 Jun) and ~19M (Oct, 14.1M to Binance on 9 Oct). ~233M remains non-circulating.
Utility
Payment for data, CCIP and CRE services (fees paid in other tokens are converted to LINK via Payment Abstraction); staking collateral for node operators and community stakers.
Concentration
Chainlink Labs and related wallets control the ~23% still non-circulating; release timing is at their discretion, not on a public schedule.
Sinks
No burn. Chainlink Reserve ~6.29M (no withdrawals planned for years); staking v0.2 pool full at 45M; Grayscale GLNK 10.03M (30 Jun) plus a Bitwise ETF.

Bull case

CCIP 2.0 and CRE turn bank and fund pilots into paid production, Reserve purchases keep rising from ~430k LINK a month, and quarterly releases slow down. LINK reclaims the $15.44 September high and then targets the $18.66 level of Oct 2025.

Bear case

Quarterly releases of ~15–20M LINK keep landing on Binance while Reserve buying stays a fraction of that, and enterprise revenue stays off-chain. LINK loses the ~$10.90 September floor and retests the $7.19 July low.
