HYPE

Hyperliquid

DeFi

The leading on-chain perp exchange, whose fees buy back its own token every day.

Dominant, richly valued v1.2 · as of 2026-10-20 · framework v1.13 Coinsight · all analyses
Bottom line

Hyperliquid is the largest on-chain perpetuals exchange: ~57% of DEX open interest and daily volume equal to ~13% of Binance futures (14 Oct). Almost all fees buy HYPE for the Assistance Fund, which held ~48M HYPE bought for ~$1.36B by 13 Oct. HYPE is +114% over a year and only −17% from its 23 Sep ATH. The catch is valuation and overhang: only ~22% of max supply circulates, FDV is ~$77B, and the team's vested allocation can be claimed far faster than it has been.

How a perp trade flows through Hyperliquid

Trader
Deposits USDC

Bridged from Arbitrum into HyperCore; no HYPE needed.

HyperCore
Places a BTC perp order

Order sits on a fully on-chain order book; no gas for placing or cancelling.

Validators
HyperBFT matches it

Blocks finalise in under a second; makers and takers are matched on-chain.

Fees
Taker fee paid in USDC

Lower for accounts that stake HYPE; part goes to builders and the HLP vault.

Assistance Fund
Buys HYPE every day

Swaps ~97–99% of fees for HYPE on the spot book; held tokens are treated as burned.

HLP vault
Backstops liquidations

Takes over liquidated positions; auto-deleveraging is the last resort.

Where HYPE comes in: traders never have to touch it, because fees and margin are in USDC. HYPE is bought with those fees, staked to secure validators and unlock fee discounts, used as gas on HyperEVM, and posted as a bond by HIP-3 market deployers.

Buybacks: the Fund held ~37.1M HYPE in mid-Dec 2025 and 48.0M on 13 Oct 2026 (+10.9M in ~10 months), extrapolated to 12 months. Team payouts: 1.2M (Jan), 0.14M (Feb), 0.33M (Apr), 0.43M (Aug) and 3.75M OTC (Oct) are reported; other months are assumed at ~0.3M, so treat ~7.5M as an estimate. On paper ~9.9M a month (23.8% vesting over 24 months after the Nov 2025 cliff) could have been claimed. Buybacks out-ran team sales, but only because the team claimed a fraction of what it could.

DefiLlama annualised, 20 Oct. Sep 2026: $91.3M fees, $74.2M revenue. Real fees paid by traders.

  • strong signal
    Total bought back
    ~48M HYPE

$1.36B spent, worth ~$3.95B on 13 Oct. Direct, measurable demand for HYPE.

  • strong signal
    Open interest
    $7.77B

57% of on-chain perp OI (Castle Labs, 14 Oct); 9.3% of global perp OI at the July record. Harder to inflate than volume.

  • medium signal
    Volume vs Binance
    ~13%

$6.64B vs $51.29B in 24h, 14 Oct. Volume swings with incentives and market mood.

Hyperliquid has the cleanest usage-to-token link in this set: real fees, paid in USDC, buy HYPE every day. The scoreboard to watch is HYPE bought per month against what the team and foundation release.

Project

What it is
A purpose-built layer-1 (HyperCore) running a fully on-chain order book for perpetuals and spot, plus HyperEVM, a general smart-contract layer that shares the same state.
Team
Hyperliquid Labs, led by Jeff Yan (ex-Hudson River Trading) with co-founder iliensinc. Self-funded, no venture round; the Hyper Foundation runs governance and grants.
Technology
HyperBFT consensus with sub-second finality; gas-free order placement; HIP-3 lets anyone who stakes enough HYPE deploy their own perp markets (stocks, pre-IPO, niche tokens); USDH is a native stablecoin issued by Native Markets.
Traction
~$6.64B 24h volume and $7.77B open interest (Castle Labs, 14 Oct); record 9.3% of global perp open interest in July; Sep 2026 fees $91.3M, revenue $74.2M.
Competitors
Binance, Bybit and OKX futures; perp DEXs such as Aster, Lighter and edgeX; prediction and RWA venues for HIP-3 markets.
Key risks
US regulation (Americans are barred; Jeff Yan is lobbying for rules that spare the chain); a small validator set; HLP and auto-deleveraging in crashes like 10 Oct 2025; volume that falls with market activity.
Roadmap
On testnet: priority order handling that requires delegating at least 10 HYPE (no mainnet date). Monthly team distributions on the 6th; US access depends on SEC rules now in comment.

Tokenomics

Supply
1B HYPE created at genesis. CoinGecko counts ~222M circulating (~22% of max) and 955M total, after ~45M treated as burned. Market cap $18.0B vs FDV $77.4B.
Emissions
No inflation schedule; 38.9% of genesis supply is reserved for future emissions and community rewards, released at the foundation's discretion.
Unlocks
Core contributors hold 23.8% (~238M). On paper ~9.9M HYPE a month has been claimable since Nov 2025; actual payouts ran 0.14M to 0.53M a month, then 3.75M sold OTC in Oct 2026.
Utility
Validator staking, trading-fee discounts, HyperEVM gas, and the stake HIP-3 market deployers must post. Trading fees themselves are paid in USDC.
Concentration
Team, foundation and future-emission wallets hold most of the supply; the 31% genesis airdrop is the main float. Circulating counts differ by source (The Block used ~270M in Dec 2025).
Sinks
Assistance Fund buys HYPE daily with ~97–99% of fees, plus ~90% of USDC reserve yield since Oct 2026 (first $14.58M). ~48M HYPE held, treated as burned.

Bull case

Fees keep running near $70M a month and the Assistance Fund keeps absorbing more HYPE than the team sells; HIP-3 markets and USDH widen revenue beyond crypto perps. A clear US route reopens the biggest market and HYPE reclaims $97 and makes a new high above $100.

Bear case

Volume fades with the market, buybacks shrink with it, and the team's large claimable allocation or new emissions add supply faster than the fund absorbs it. Another 10 Oct-style cascade or a US enforcement action dents trust and HYPE loses the ~$78 October floor and heads for the $55 August level.

Watch before the next re-run

  • Monthly fees and Assistance Fund buybacks (HYPE per month)
  • Team distribution on the 6th of each month vs the ~9.9M on-paper unlock
  • Open interest share vs Binance and other perp DEXs
  • $78 October floor and the $97.96 ATH
