CRV

Curve DAO

DeFi

The stablecoin DEX and crvUSD lender of DeFi, still paying fees to lockers, but emissions dwarf what holders earn.

Mature DeFi, weak token v1.1 · as of 2026-10-21 · framework v1.13 Coinsight · all analyses
Bottom line

Curve is still a core piece of DeFi plumbing: ~$126B traded in 2025, crvUSD held its peg through the 2026 sell-off, and Llamalend V2 shipped on Optimism and Ethereum. The token is the weak part: fees paid to veCRV lockers ran at roughly $100k–$120k a week in mid-2026, while ~111M new CRV (about $33M at average prices) was emitted over the year. CRV is −26% over 12 months but has doubled off its June low of $0.18, helped by a lower emission rate since August.

How a stablecoin swap on Curve pays veCRV holders

Trader
Swaps USDC for USDT

Directly on Curve or routed by an aggregator.

StableSwap pool
Prices the trade

Curve's formula keeps near-1:1 pairs cheap to swap, with low slippage.

Pool fee
Small fee is charged

Half goes to liquidity providers, half to the DAO.

Fee collector
Converts to crvUSD

DAO share of swap fees plus 80% of crvUSD interest, gathered weekly.

veCRV holders
Receive crvUSD weekly

Paid pro rata to locked CRV.

Gauges
New CRV to LPs

veCRV votes decide which pools get emissions; LPs often sell them.

CRV is not needed to trade: the swap is paid in the assets being swapped. CRV matters only when locked as veCRV, which earns the fee share and steers emissions. New CRV is minted through gauges to liquidity providers; nothing is burned.

Fees: weekly veCRV distributions of ~$106k–$121k in mid-2026 (Curve News, weeks 22 and 28) annualized; altFINS shows ~$20.5k a day of protocol revenue in Aug 2026 (~$7.5M a year), so the true figure is roughly $6–8M. Emissions: ~111M CRV over 12 months (Epoch 5 rate until 13 Aug, Epoch 6 after) times the $0.30 average daily close. Next 12 months: ~97M CRV at today's $0.39. Fees cover roughly a fifth of new supply.

Curve still moves large volume and its stablecoin works, but the cash that reaches CRV holders is small: about $6–8M a year against roughly $33M of new CRV. The emission cut each August slowly closes that gap; a real turn needs fees to grow, from Llamalend V2, FXSwap or crvUSD.

Project

What it is
A decentralized exchange built for swaps between similar assets (stablecoins, ETH and BTC variants), plus the crvUSD stablecoin and Llamalend lending markets. Live on Ethereum since 2020 and on many other chains.
Team
Founded by Michael Egorov. Core development is done by Swiss Stake AG; its 17.45M CRV (~$6.7M) budget for 2026 was voted down in Dec 2025, with Yearn and Convex addresses casting ~90% of the no votes.
Technology
StableSwap and crypto pools with low slippage; crvUSD uses soft-liquidation (LLAMMA) and PegKeepers; Llamalend V2 adds isolated markets that accept Curve LP tokens as collateral; FXSwap pools power YieldBasis.
Traction
~$126B volume in 2025 (vs ~$119B in 2024); TVL fell from ~$2.0B (mid-May) to ~$1.4–1.6B (Jul–Aug 2026). YieldBasis built on Curve pools did ~$2B volume in H1 2026, but its fees go to YieldBasis, not Curve.
Competitors
Uniswap, Fluid and Balancer for swaps; Aave, Morpho and Sky for lending and stablecoins; DEX aggregators route around any single venue.
Key risks
Fees to token holders are small next to emissions; governance power sits with Convex and Yearn; founder-linked YieldBasis has a large crvUSD credit line; a smart-contract or depeg event would hit TVL directly.
Roadmap
2026 plan: Llamalend V2 (shipped on Optimism and Ethereum), FXSwap on-chain FX pools, more crvUSD collateral and chains, a rebuilt front end. No firm dates for the remaining items.

Launch-spike ATH Launch-spike ATH. The $15.37 high came on the token's first day (13 Aug 2020) and CRV never came back within 50% of it. The framework uses the Dec 2024 cycle high of about $1.20 as the reference instead.

Tokenomics

Supply
Max 3.03B CRV; ~2.43B in total supply and ~1.58B counted as circulating by CoinGecko. FDV $952M vs market cap $620M.
Emissions
New CRV goes to liquidity providers through gauges. The rate is cut by 2^(1/4) each August: ~115.5M a year in Epoch 5, ~97M a year since Epoch 6 started in Aug 2026 (about 6% of circulating supply).
Unlocks / vesting
Team, investor and employee allocations finished vesting years ago; gauge emissions are now the only source of new supply.
Utility
Lock for up to 4 years as veCRV: votes on gauge weights (where emissions go), DAO votes, weekly crvUSD fee share and boosted LP rewards. Not needed to trade on Curve.
Concentration
~851M CRV locked (undated report). Convex controlled ~54% of veCRV in 2024; Convex and Yearn decided the Dec 2025 grant vote.
Sinks
Long locks (veCRV) are the main sink; no burn or buyback. Holders get 50% of pool trading fees and 80% of crvUSD interest, paid in crvUSD.

Bull case

Lower emissions since August (~97M CRV a year) plus Llamalend V2 and FXSwap lift weekly veCRV fees back toward the 2025 level of ~$500k+ a week. Price holds the $0.33–0.35 area from mid-October and retakes the $0.44 January high, then the $0.58 high of Oct 2025.

Bear case

Fees stay near $100k a week while ~$35M+ of CRV is emitted each year and sold by farmers; TVL keeps leaking. Governance fights with Convex and Yearn starve core development, and CRV gives back the August rally toward the $0.18–0.20 June range.

Watch before the next re-run

  • Weekly veCRV fee distribution (now ~$100k–$120k)
  • TVL and crvUSD supply, plus Llamalend V2 market growth
  • Core development funding after the rejected 2026 grant
  • $0.33 support (Oct closes) and the $0.44 January high
