Avalanche

Bottom line

Avalanche is doing more than ever: a record 235.6M transactions in Q2 2026, the Helicon upgrade, Paxos and Schwab access, and RWA deals such as Grove's $250M. The token has not followed: −52% over a year, a $5.89 low in June, and fees so cheap that the burn is tiny next to ~11M AVAX a year of staking rewards. Two treasury companies and three ETFs add demand, but both have shrunk in value. The bull case needs fees to become meaningful or the Foundation's zero-inflation idea to turn into a real change.

How a USDC transfer runs on the Avalanche C-Chain

User
Sends USDC from a wallet

Signs an Ethereum-style transaction on the C-Chain.

Wallet
Pays gas in AVAX

Base fee is at least the validator-voted floor (5 nAVAX per gas since late Sep 2026).

Validators
Snowman consensus

Staked validators sample each other and finalise the block in under a second.

C-Chain
Executes the transfer

USDC contract moves the balance; with Helicon, execution runs continuously after ordering.

Protocol
Burns the fee

Base fee and tip are both burned; validators get nothing from the fee.

P-Chain
Mints staking rewards

Validators and delegators earn newly minted AVAX when their staking period ends.

AVAX is used for gas, which is burned, and for staking, which mints new AVAX. Stablecoin and RWA transfers on the C-Chain still need AVAX for gas, but Avalanche L1s can use their own gas token and bypass AVAX except for a small validator fee, which is the core value-accrual question.

Usage and adoption

AVAX per year: fee burn vs staking emissions (early-Oct 2026 run rate)
Fees burned (early-Oct pace)
~0.4M
Staking emissions
~11.2M

Burn: C-Chain burned 1,732 AVAX on 1 Oct and 693 on 4 Oct, after validators raised the gas floor to 5 nAVAX under Helicon; annualised here. Before Helicon fees were near zero, so a true 12-month burn total is likely lower still; none could be sourced. Emissions: 2.39% inflation × ~470.6M total supply. Either way, burn covers well under 10% of new AVAX.

    Fees burned
    693–1,732 AVAX/day

  • medium signal
    ETF holdings
    ~1.26% of supply

VanEck, Grayscale and Bitwise; VAVX alone $20.4M (14 Oct). Direct AVAX demand, but small.

  • medium signal
    Treasury companies
    ~29M AVAX

AVAT ~15.3M (30 Jun), AVAX One ~14.0M (14 May); both mostly staked.

  • weak signal
    Transactions
    235.6M in Q2 2026

Nansen; record quarter. Cheap transactions include bots and games, so volume says little about paid demand.

Avalanche is busier and cheaper than ever, but cheap blockspace means usage barely touches AVAX supply. The adoption signals that matter for the token are the burn after Helicon's higher gas floor, ETF and treasury holdings, and whether RWA issuers pay fees in AVAX.

Project

What it is
A proof-of-stake smart-contract network (mainnet Sept 2020). The C-Chain runs Ethereum-compatible apps; companies can launch their own Avalanche L1s (formerly subnets) that connect to it.
Team
Founded by Emin Gün Sirer (Ava Labs CEO). Ava Labs named Charley Cooper president and Lydia Chiu CFO on 18 Aug 2026; the Avalanche Foundation handles grants and economics research.
Technology
Snowman consensus with sub-second finality. Avalanche9000 made L1s much cheaper to run; Helicon (22 Sep 2026) added continuous execution on the C-Chain and 48-hour staking.
Traction
Record 235.6M transactions in Q2 2026 (Nansen), seventh straight quarter of growth. Paxos added AVAX and USDC on Avalanche (17 Sep); Grove's $250M deal lifts Avalanche RWA to ~$445M.
Competitors
Solana and Ethereum L2s for apps and stablecoins; Ethereum, Polygon and permissioned chains for tokenization; other app-chain stacks for custom L1s.
Key risks
Median fee down 99.6% to $0.000014, so usage barely burns AVAX; activity on L1s often does not need AVAX; staking emissions outpace burn; treasury companies trade far below their launch prices.
Roadmap
Not yet live: ACP-285 reward cut phasing in over 90 days to ~Dec 2026; Schwab AVAX trading by end-2026; Foundation's zero-inflation validator model (proposal stage); Ava Labs exploring backup cryptography (Oct 2026).

Tokenomics

Supply
Max 720M AVAX. ~443.9M circulating, ~470.6M total (CoinGecko, 20 Oct); FDV $4.60B.
Inflation
Staking rewards are minted on the P-Chain: ~2.39% a year (Staking Rewards), about 11M AVAX. ACP-285 lowers the minimum reward rate from 10% to 7.5%.
Unlocks
No large scheduled unlocks left; most initial allocations have vested, so new supply now comes mainly from staking rewards.
Utility
Gas on the C-Chain, P-Chain and X-Chain (all burned), staking for validators and delegators, and fees for Avalanche L1 validators.
Distribution
~43% of circulating supply staked (Jul 2026). Two treasury companies hold ~29M AVAX (~6.6% of circulating) and stake most of it.
Sinks
Fee burn (5.07M AVAX burned all-time by ~May 2026), staking, three US ETFs (~1.26% of supply), treasury companies.

Bull case

Paxos, Schwab and RWA issuers bring steady institutional flow, and the higher gas floor plus ACP-285 narrow the gap between burn and emissions. AVAX holds the $9.50–10 area and retakes the $11.60 October high, opening a run toward the $14.79 January level.

Bear case

Activity keeps growing on near-free blockspace and separate L1s, so burn stays a rounding error next to ~11M AVAX a year of rewards. Treasury companies, trading far below launch, stop buying or sell; AVAX loses $9 and retests the $5.89 June low.

Watch before the next re-run

  • Daily C-Chain burn after the 5 nAVAX gas floor
  • ACP-285 rollout and the zero-inflation validator proposal
  • ETF flows and AVAT / AVAX One holdings
  • $9.50 support and the $11.60 October high
