ARB

Arbitrum

Layer 2

The largest Ethereum rollup now earns real licence fees from Robinhood Chain, but ARB captures none of them directly.

Strong tech, weak token v1.2 · as of 2026-10-20 · framework v1.13 Coinsight · all analyses
Bottom line

Arbitrum is a mature, widely used Ethereum layer 2, and Robinhood Chain made the DAO's income jump to a record $5.45M in September 2026, mostly from licence fees. The token has not kept up: ARB is −92% from its January 2024 high and −42% over a year, even after a +159% bounce from the August low. ARB is a governance token with no fee share, no burn and no DAO buyback, while ~92.65M ARB (about $18M at today's price) unlocks to the team and investors every month until ~March 2027. The bull case rests on licence income staying high and the unlock overhang ending; the bear case is that Robinhood's September was a one-off memecoin spike.

22 Oct 26 Four temperature checks close. Glamsterdam readiness, L1 governance recovery, treasury ETH transfers and the USDG plan; then the 16 Nov unlock of 92.65M ARB.

How a swap on Arbitrum One flows through the rollup

User
Signs a swap in a wallet

E.g. USDC to ETH on a DEX; gas is paid in ETH, not ARB.

Timeboost
Fast lane, if bought

Traders who win the express-lane auction get a small time edge; the bids go to the DAO.

Sequencer
Orders and confirms

Offchain Labs-run sequencer gives a soft confirmation in well under a second.

Ethereum
Batch posted to L1

Transactions are compressed and posted to Ethereum; this data cost is the main expense.

Validators (BoLD)
State can be challenged

Anyone can dispute a wrong state claim during the challenge window; ZK proofs are being added for faster confirmation.

DAO treasury
Keeps the net fee

L2 fees minus L1 costs go to the DAO in ETH, next to Timeboost bids and Orbit licence fees.

Where ARB comes in: nowhere in the transaction itself. Gas, Timeboost bids and licence fees are all paid in ETH or other assets to the DAO treasury. ARB holders only vote on how that treasury and the protocol are run, which is why record revenue has not translated into token demand.

Unlocks: 92.65M ARB on the 16th of each month, valued at that day's CoinGecko close; ~$157M over the 12 unlocks from Nov 2025 to Oct 2026. DAO income: $6.19M for H1 2026 (Foundation, unaudited) and a record $5.45M in September, of which $4.75M was Orbit licence fees and ~$0.51M Arbitrum One fees (net sequencer revenue plus Timeboost are inside these totals). Even the record month covered under a third of that month's unlock value, and none of the income goes to ARB holders.

    DAO income
    $5.45M in Sep

Record month; 87% Orbit licence fees, mostly Robinhood Chain. H1 2026 was $6.19M in total. Real paid usage, but it accrues to the treasury, not ARB.

  • medium signal
    Arbitrum One fees
    ~$0.51M in Sep

The main chain's own fee income is small because L2 gas is cheap. Timeboost added roughly $3M a year.

DefiLlama $3.5B (19 Oct) vs TokenPost $4.51B (10 Oct); methods differ. Paxos USDG launched natively on 6 Oct.

Foundation figure for Arbitrum One. Includes bots and arbitrage, so it says little about paid demand.

Arbitrum's best adoption signal is DAO income, and it is finally rising thanks to Orbit licence fees. But it is concentrated in one licensee and still small next to the ~$13M a month of ARB unlocked; watch whether October holds up after Robinhood Chain's subsidy ended.

Project

What it is
An optimistic rollup on Ethereum (Arbitrum One, live since 2021) plus Nova and the Orbit toolkit that lets others launch their own chains on Arbitrum technology. ARB (launched March 2023) governs the Arbitrum DAO.
Team
Built by Offchain Labs (co-founders Ed Felten, Steven Goldfeder and Harry Kalodner). The Arbitrum Foundation supports the ecosystem; the DAO of ARB holders controls upgrades and a treasury that held ~$125M in non-ARB assets on 30 Jun 2026.
Technology
Nitro stack with Stylus (contracts in Rust and C++), Timeboost (an auction for a fast transaction lane, paid to the DAO) and BoLD (permissionless fraud-proof validation). ArbOS 61 “Elara” (20 Aug 2026) quadrupled Stylus contract size and added a new base-fee manager.
Traction
Robinhood Chain, an Orbit chain, went live 1 Jul 2026 and pays 10% of its net revenue back (8% DAO, 2% Developer Guild). DeFi TVL on Arbitrum is ~$1.41B and stablecoins ~$3.5B to $4.5B, depending on the source (Oct 2026).
Competitors
Base and the OP Stack Superchain for rollups and app chains, ZK rollups, Solana, and Ethereum L1 itself as its fees fall.
Key risks
DAO income depends heavily on one licensee and on memecoin trading; Arbitrum One's own fees are small (~$0.51M in Sep). Team and investor unlocks keep adding supply; Security Council emergency powers were used in Oct 2026 to pause new Stylus activations and add a BoLD safeguard.
Roadmap
Four temperature checks close 22 Oct 2026 (Glamsterdam readiness, L1 governance recovery, treasury ETH transfers, a USDG plan with 100M more ARB for incentives). BoLD is being extended to accept ZK proofs with a Fast Confirmation Committee. Team and investor vesting ends ~Mar 2027.

Tokenomics

Supply
10B ARB fixed at launch; ~6.89B (69%) circulating. Market cap $1.30B vs fully diluted $1.88B.
Inflation
No ARB is minted today. The DAO may vote to mint up to 2% a year but has not used it.
Unlocks
92.65M ARB a month (56.1M team and advisors, 36.5M investors), about $18M at today's price and ~1.3% of float. Ends ~16 Mar 2027 (some models put the last tranche in Feb 2027).
Utility
Governance only: voting on upgrades and treasury spending. Gas on Arbitrum is paid in ETH, so ARB is not needed to use the chain.
Concentration
The DAO treasury is the largest single holder; with team and investor allocations, ~92.3% of supply was unlocked or DAO-held by 17 Aug 2026. The DAO keeps spending ARB on incentives (DRIP: 80M, plus 100M proposed).
Sinks
No burn and no DAO buyback. Fees and licence income go to the DAO treasury in ETH, and a proposal would convert licence fees to USDG rather than ARB. Offchain Labs' 2025 buyback was a company treasury purchase.

Bull case

Robinhood Chain and other Orbit licensees keep DAO income near the September run rate of ~$5M a month, and the DAO starts directing some of it toward ARB. The monthly unlock ends around March 2027, removing ~$18M a month of sell pressure at today's price; ARB reclaims the $0.235 September high.

Bear case

September proves a one-off: Robinhood Chain's daily revenue fell 83% from its peak by 11 Sep and its gas subsidy ended 29 Sep, so DAO income drops back toward ~$1M a month. Unlocks keep outpacing demand, ARB loses the $0.17 October floor and heads back toward the $0.073 August low.

Watch before the next re-run

  • Monthly DAO income, split into Arbitrum One fees, Timeboost and Orbit licence fees
  • Robinhood Chain fees in October and November, after the gas subsidy ended
  • The 22 Oct temperature checks, the USDG plan and any proposal to route income to ARB
  • Monthly 92.65M ARB unlock (16th) until ~Mar 2027; $0.17 floor and $0.235 high
