ALGO

Algorand

Layer 1

A fast, academically designed layer-1 leading on post-quantum security, with a security budget still paid by its foundation.

Bottom line

Algorand's engineering is a real strength: native post-quantum (Falcon-1024) accounts went live in August 2026 and the chain finalises blocks in seconds. The economics are the problem: transaction fees of roughly 47K ALGO a month cover well under 1% of the ~80M ALGO a year the Foundation pays stakers, and that subsidy now runs to January 2028 while a fix (Project King Safety) is still being drafted. The token is −39% over a year, about flat over three years while BTC rose ~179%, and the Foundation has changed CEO and lost several executives in 2026. Treat it as a high-risk bet on institutional and tokenization adoption that has not yet shown up in fees.

How a USDC payment flows over Algorand

Sender
Signs a USDC transfer

Wallet signs with an Ed25519 or, since v5.0.0, a Falcon-1024 key; pays a flat fee in ALGO.

Relay nodes
Gossip the transaction

Spread it to participating nodes across the network.

Lottery
Proposer chosen at random

A verifiable random draw, weighted by stake, picks who proposes the block.

Committee
Votes the block final

A random committee of stakers certifies it in seconds; no forks, no reorgs.

Proposer
Gets paid

Foundation bonus of ~9 ALGO per block plus half of the block's fees.

Receiver
USDC arrives, final

Can be redeemed with Circle or moved to other chains.

Where ALGO comes in: every transaction pays a small ALGO fee and accounts keep a minimum ALGO balance; staked ALGO selects proposers and committees. The USDC itself bypasses ALGO, and validators are paid mainly from the Foundation's ALGO, not from users' fees.

Usage and adoption

Transaction fees paid

Staking rewards paid (mostly Foundation)

Fees: 44K, 47K and 50K ALGO in Mar, Apr and May 2026 (Algo Insights reports), about 47K a month or ~0.56M a year (≈ $64k at $0.113). Rewards: 40.15M ALGO in H1 2026, doubled to ~80M a year (≈ $9.1M). The Foundation's Dec 2025 figures say the same per block: ~9.1 ALGO of bonus vs ~0.05 ALGO of fees. Fees cover under 1% of what stakers are paid.

  • strong signal
    Fees
    ~47K ALGO / month

Mar–May 2026 average, ≈ $5k a month. The cleanest paid-usage signal, and it is tiny.

  • medium signal
    Stablecoins
    ~$67M

DefiLlama, ~97% USDC. Kraken added USDC on Algorand in Jan 2026. Snapshot date unclear.

  • medium signal
    DeFi TVL
    ~$46M

DefiLlama; Folks Finance and Tinyman are the largest apps. Small for a $1B chain.

  • medium signal
    Tokenized RWAs
    ~$65M

DefiLlama RWA AUM, mostly Lofty real estate. Claims of ~$294M elsewhere could not be verified.

Algorand's usage is real but nearly free: fees are a rounding error next to the ~80M ALGO a year the Foundation pays to keep validators online. The scoreboard is whether Project King Safety finds a fee or emission model the stakers accept before the subsidy ends in Jan 2028, and whether tokenization deals lift stablecoin and RWA balances.

Project

What it is
A proof-of-stake layer-1 (mainnet since June 2019) designed by Turing Award winner Silvio Micali: random committee selection, blocks final in seconds with no forks, native tokens (ASAs) and smart contracts on the AVM.
Team
Two entities until 2026: the Algorand Foundation (treasury, grants, staking rewards) and Algorand Technologies (Micali's company, core protocol R&D). On 19 Mar 2026 Technologies' IP and protocol work moved into the Foundation, which pledged at least $15M for protocol upkeep. The Foundation moved back to the US in Jan 2026; William Herkelrath (ex-Chainlink) replaced CEO Staci Warden on 31 Aug 2026.
Technology
Post-quantum lead: first Falcon-signed mainnet transaction in Nov 2025, native Falcon-1024 accounts with v5.0.0 (activated around 22 Aug 2026), State Proofs, and a roadmap to broad quantum resilience by end of 2027.
Traction
Institutional and payments focus: Kraken added USDC on Algorand (Jan 2026), Brale stablecoin issuance, tokenized real estate (Lofty) and earlier deals such as Archax's tokenized abrdn money market fund. DeFi stays small: ~$46M TVL and ~$67M stablecoins on DefiLlama.
Competitors
Institution-focused L1s: Hedera, Stellar, XRP Ledger, Avalanche; for tokenization, Ethereum and its L2s, which hold most RWA value.
Key risks
Staking rewards depend on the Foundation's treasury; fees are tiny; any economic fix needs 90% of online stake; leadership churn (CEO change, CTO and CMO exits reported in Oct 2026); weak DeFi liquidity.
Roadmap
Native post-quantum multisig and Falcon-512 targeted by end of 2026; Project King Safety (new fee and incentive model, possibly higher fees, MEV or new emissions) in consultation with the Ecosystem Advisory Council; broad quantum resilience by end of 2027.

ATH check ATH check passed. The $3.56 high came the day after launch (20 Jun 2019), but ALGO returned to roughly $2.3–2.5 in late 2021, within 50% of it, so the launch-spike rule does not apply. Price is −96.8% from the ATH.

Tokenomics

Supply
10B ALGO maximum; ~9.07B circulating (CoinGecko). Market cap and FDV are both ~$1.03B.
Emissions
No protocol inflation. Block proposers get a Foundation-funded bonus (10 ALGO per block at the start of 2025, decaying 1% every million blocks, ~9.1 in Dec 2025) plus half the block's fees: ~40.15M ALGO paid in H1 2026, about 4% a year on stake.
Unlocks/vesting
Scheduled vesting ended in 2024 (Tokenomist). New float now comes from Foundation-paid rewards and any Foundation sales. The reward subsidy, first due to end in Jan 2027, was extended to Jan 2028 in July 2026.
Utility
Transaction fees and minimum balances, consensus staking (no lock-up, no slashing), and Foundation governance.
Concentration
Of ~2.02B ALGO staked in June 2026, the Foundation held 19.4%. Consensus upgrades need 90% of online stake, so the Foundation's stake alone could block one.
Sinks
Weak. No burn, no buybacks, no US spot ETF (Europe has ETPs such as 21Shares). Fees go to a fee sink, half to the proposer. Staking is the only meaningful lock-up.

Bull case

Post-quantum security becomes a selling point for institutions, the new CEO turns the Foundation's bank and tokenization contacts into balances on-chain, and King Safety lifts fees without driving users away. ALGO holds the $0.077 July low and retakes the $0.136 September high, then the $0.19 level of Oct 2025.

Bear case

Fees stay near 47K ALGO a month, so the reward subsidy either keeps draining the treasury or becomes new emissions. Leadership churn slows delivery, DeFi stays under $50M, and ALGO revisits $0.077 or lower.

Watch before the next re-run

  • Post-quantum multisig and Falcon-512 delivery by end of 2026
